Bike Education
The main course taught in Silver Wheels is the Road I course designed by the League of American Bicyclists. Silver Wheels is fortunate to have three certified instructors: Ed Stewart, Bob Burkhardt and Karen Farago. Ed is the currently active instructor.
The Road I Course (as taught by Ed) consists of four, 3-hour sessions. The class times are normally agreed to by the class as far as practical. Sessions include some classroom time for discussions presentations. About half of the session is done on the road for more practical instruction. Most graduates believe this is the best part.
The course is good for almost any cyclist, regardless their experience. Instruction will be designed to fit the students as much as possible. The course is very appropriate for the beginner who wants to learn how to get started in cycling and for the more experienced enthusiast who might want to improve on some areas and to feel more confident on the bike in certain situations. Class size is usually from 3 to 10 students – this assures all your questions will be answered.
The curriculum includes knowledge about the bike itself, how it works and understanding how it needs to fit the rider; some maintenance items like flat tire changing and simpler adjustments; vehicle laws and how they apply to cyclists; how to ride confidently in many situations – city traffic, bike trail and country roads; special maneuvers for emergency situations; and all sorts of little things about cycling and how to make it enjoyable. The instructors bring years of experience to the class and want to pass on their practical knowledge to you.
To register for the next class, contact Ed Stewart at 440-322-7300 days, 440-365-6784 eves, or by email at ed@stewartadv.com. The cost is $50.00 ($25.00 for Silver Wheels Members) and includes a text; successful completion of the course yields a certificate from the League of American Bicyclists. |
