Members In The News

June 16, 2007

On Saturday, June 16, you can watch Silver Wheelers Ray Koepf and Ed Stewart as they demonstrate techniques in fine art painting. Ray and Ed will be part of Elyria’s Festival of Arts, being held at Ely Square in downtown Elyria from 1 to 5. Come on out, sit around and make fun of the guys as they throw paint onto canvas and try to call it art. Maybe you can even do a little painting yourself. There will also be a wine tasting by Paul’s Beverage, although you will have to walk across the park to partake. There are at least ten artists participating in the event, producing a variety of art forms. If you’re out riding anyway, come on down.  If it’s raining, maybe they’ll work in watercolors.

Five Silver Wheelers help raise over $40K for Rotary project

The week of July 8 through 13 five members of Silver Wheels rode over 400 miles to raise money for a Rotary district humanitarian project. Members Pat Serio, Herb de la Porte, Kurt Anderson, Judy Keys, and Ed Stewart joined other Rotarians on the six-day ride through Northwest Ohio. The trip took them from Elyria to Port Clinton to Bowling Green to Bryan to Findlay to Mansfield and back to Elyria in a loop of 409 miles. While there were over 40 cyclists who ride some portion of the loop, the Silver Wheelers were part of a core team of nine that rode the full distance.

The Rotary project to benefit from the fundraising ride is called MESA (Medical Equipment and Supplies Abroad) which accepts used or obsolete but usable equipment and/or supplies for hospitals and schools and then ships them to developing countries mostly in South America. The money raised by the group goes toward the storage and shipping costs of the project.

This was the third year for the Rotary Tour for MESA. The first year the group rode to Chicago and raised around $25,000; last year the group rode a similar loop and raised around $40,000. This year’s goal was to raise $50,000; the level of donations already is over $43,000 so that goal may yet be reached.

Weather this year was a concern for the first three days. The tour group faced temperatures that exceeded 100 each day along with very strong headwinds that ranged from 20-35 mph. The second set of three days was much nicer with tailwinds and more moderate temperatures.

Many members of Silver Wheels contributed to the project. If you would like to contribute, you can download and print the attached brochure and send in a check made payable to MESA. The donation is 100% tax deductible; your donation will be confirmed by letter from the MESA office.
